Capstone: release review and recovery reasoning

Assemble a concrete review of a synthetic catalog change, classify failures and produce a bounded handoff that separates local evidence from unexecuted environment checks.

Lesson goals

  • Integrate package, values, identity, API and data compatibility evidence.
  • Choose the next diagnostic question from the failing boundary.
  • Write a complete review and recovery decision record.

State the synthetic change

The capstone moves catalog chart 0.4.0 to 0.5.0 while retaining application 2.7.1. It replaces a single pageSize setting with a validated settings map, adds a stable configuration checksum and keeps selectors unchanged. No database migration is intended. The release name and namespace stay explicit teaching inputs. This is enough specificity to review actual consequences: values migration, generated ConfigMap content, Pod-template change and stable routing identity. A vague request to update the chart would not reveal those obligations. Write the intended differences before inspecting a success indicator or choosing a lifecycle command.

Assemble the review inventory

The first example records exact claims rather than operational steps. Package identity and dependency approval cover source inputs; schema and render checks cover local structure; selector comparison covers one routing invariant. Application parsing and configuration propagation remain distinct acceptance obligations. The record intentionally states that Helm rendering was not executed here because no client is available. A realistic handoff does not turn that missing check into an invented result. It names the requirement and owner while preserving the useful work already completed, including reviewed snippets and executed pure calculations.

text A bounded capstone review record
change: catalog 0.4.0 -> 0.5.0; application 2.7.1 unchanged
values migration: pageSize -> settings.pageSize
invariant: same application/instance selectors
local evidence: reviewed source + executed pure Python models
unexecuted: Helm lint/render, server acceptance, workload behavior
external data mutation: none intended; confirm application contract

This is an authored synthetic decision record, not a captured deployment report. It makes the unexecuted checks visible.

Classify the first failure

Suppose a proposed input uses settings.pageSize as the string "5". The schema should reject the type before a manifest is accepted, so investigate the input contract first. Suppose instead the rendered selector differs from Pod labels; inspect helper context and protected identity keys. If local contracts pass but a future authorized application check fails, move to the relevant readiness, configuration or data boundary. Do not keep editing templates merely because Helm produced the package. The second example maps synthetic findings to next review questions, preserving the separation between rendering evidence and environment behavior.

python Synthetic diagnostic routing
next_question = {
    "wrong-type": "Which values layer supplied the string?",
    "selector-mismatch": "Which helper changed identity labels?",
    "old-settings": "Does the process reload or require restart?"
}
for finding in ("wrong-type", "old-settings"):
    print(next_question[finding])
Expected output
Which values layer supplied the string?
Does the process reload or require restart?

This dictionary encodes authored review questions only; it performs no automatic diagnosis or environment inspection.

Choose recovery from consequences

For this intended stateless configuration change, an earlier compatible package may be a viable recovery candidate, but verify image availability, accepted APIs and the application’s handling of both configuration forms. If investigation discovers a hidden irreversible data change, the recovery assumptions must be revised immediately. Do not promise rollback simply because a revision exists. Also verify ownership before moving or adopting resources; changing annotations to silence a conflict can transfer future deletion responsibility. A reviewable recovery decision names the target intent, preserved state, known limits and success evidence instead of supplying an indiscriminate repair command.

Deliver a reviewable handoff

The final handoff includes package and input identities, exact intended differences, local checks actually run, failed cases, unexecuted platform checks and application recovery assumptions. Keep synthetic examples and references available so another learner can challenge the reasoning. A good result is a coherent chain from user intent to generated objects and application evidence, not the greatest number of commands. This course executes only harmless standard-library models and JSON syntax checks. It does not deploy, test a cluster, authenticate to a registry or alter external state, and its technical claims remain bounded to the stated teaching assumptions.

Common errors and fixes

A green package check hides a missing application assertion

Why it happens
Completion was defined by one tool’s exit status.
How to fix it
Tie each success claim to explicit user behavior and its evidence.
Prevent it next time
Use a layered acceptance record rather than one aggregate label.

A historical revision is assumed to be a usable recovery target

Why it happens
API, image and data compatibility were not rechecked.
How to fix it
Assess the actual target package and application state before choosing recovery.
Prevent it next time
Maintain recovery candidates as part of compatibility review.

Ownership metadata is edited to silence a collision

Why it happens
The error was treated as cosmetic rather than lifecycle protection.
How to fix it
Identify existing owners and plan a deliberate handover with retention consequences.
Prevent it next time
Inventory identity and ownership before any adoption decision.

Check your understanding

1. Write the next review action when settings.pageSize is "5" rather than 5.

Show worked solution

Locate the highest-priority input layer supplying the string and correct it to the documented integer type. Keep the schema rejection as a useful negative case and verify that defaults and valid overrides remain accepted. Do not weaken the schema or quote an integer destination merely to suppress the symptom; preserve the intended application and receiving-field contracts.

2. What must the handoff say if only Python models and JSON parsing ran?

Show worked solution

Name those exact checks, their synthetic inputs and matching outputs, then explicitly list Helm engine checks, server acceptance and application behavior as unexecuted. Include reviewed platform assumptions and the owner of remaining environment validation. This is a complete local evidence report even though it does not establish deployment success; truthful boundaries make the next review concrete.

Key takeaways

  • A complete release review links intent, inputs, identities, checks and recovery assumptions.
  • Choose the next action from the evidence boundary and actual consequences.
