Helm: chart contracts and reliable release reasoning
Eighteen developed lessons on chart authoring, values, templates, schema contracts, dependencies, configuration, lifecycle, extensions, provenance and evidence-driven delivery.
Start learningIn this course
Learn to read and design Helm charts through concrete synthetic catalog examples. The three levels connect package identity to values contracts, generated resources, application compatibility and recovery decisions. Every lesson includes developed explanations, two worked technical examples, diagnostic mistakes and solved exercises.
Study the boundaries between local rendering, Kubernetes acceptance and observed user behavior. Platform fragments remain illustrative and non-runnable; only complete harmless Python models use local execution. No configured cluster, registry, credentials, image, application endpoint or external state is accessed.
What you will learn
- Design explicit chart, values and helper interfaces with stable resource identities.
- Diagnose rendering, type, dependency and lifecycle failures at the correct evidence boundary.
- Review compatibility, provenance, security intent and recovery without unsupported runtime claims.
Your learning path
Three levels
Basic: chart and rendering foundations
Build a precise model of package identities, values, templates and local review.
- Charts, releases and evidence boundaries
- Chart layout and version contracts
- Values precedence and type preservation
- Expressions, pipelines and YAML boundaries
- Control flow, scope and whitespace
- Offline review and render diagnosis
Intermediate: authoring and lifecycle contracts
Design helper, schema, dependency, configuration and release interfaces.
- Helpers, names and stable selectors
- Values schemas and contract validation
- Dependencies, subcharts and locks
- Files, configuration and secret boundaries
- Upgrades, value history and rollback
- Hooks, chart tests and side effects
Advanced: compatibility, trust and delivery evidence
Assess extensions, artifact trust, APIs, deterministic delivery and recovery.
- CRDs, capabilities and extension lifecycle
- OCI artifact identity and provenance
- API compatibility and least privilege
- Deterministic rendering and delivery contracts
- Rollout, configuration and capacity contracts
- Capstone: release review and recovery reasoning
Who this is for
- Developers and platform learners reviewing reusable Kubernetes application packages.
- Reviewers who need precise release, ownership and recovery reasoning before operational work.
Before you start
- Basic YAML, containers and Kubernetes objects; template and values concepts are explained in context.
- No cluster, cloud account, administrator privileges or Helm installation is required to study the material.
