Lesson goals

  • Read Require rules in the intended configuration context.
  • Explain why AllowOverride and Options do not replace operating-system access control.

A request can face several independent access checks

Apache authorization decides whether a request is permitted under configured providers and containers. The operating system separately controls whether the server identity can traverse directories or read a file, and platform security mechanisms can add restrictions. Parcelโ€™s public documentation and private application material need different contracts. A 403 alone does not tell which check denied access. Establish the selected virtual host, mapped resource, applicable sections, relevant module, and bounded error evidence before changing policy or permissions.

Use the selected 2.4 authorization model deliberately

mod_authz_core provides Require composition and related authorization behavior, with providers such as host and IP checks supplied by appropriate modules. Legacy compatibility directives have different semantics and should not be casually mixed with a modern Require example. Require all granted in a public lab directory means that Apache authorization permits that scope; it does not make the path exist or grant filesystem read access. A narrower private scope needs its own reviewed identity or network policy, not the public example copied indiscriminately.

Read one explicit public-content boundary

The fragment below assumes synthetic static public files, core support, and authorization support. AllowOverride None declines distributed .htaccess overrides for this scope, and Options -Indexes disables automatic directory listing where that option applies. Neither statement is a universal hardening profile. Other inherited options, index handling, handlers, and merged sections still matter. The fragment is never loaded and creates no file or permission change. Review actual content ownership before deciding which actors may edit the containing configuration or the served tree.

apache An illustrative public static-directory scope
<Directory "/lab/parcel/public">
    AllowOverride None
    Options -Indexes
    Require all granted
</Directory>

The path is not created or accessed. Disabling listing does not deny a known file or remove a configured DirectoryIndex, and the fragment does not authorize private sibling paths.

Distributed configuration delegates part of policy

When permitted, .htaccess can change supported directory-scoped behavior according to AllowOverride and related controls. It is not read under AllowOverride None for that scope. Main configuration can be clearer and avoid per-request discovery work when the owner controls it, while delegated hosting may have different requirements. The exact allowed directives and override classes matter. Do not tell a user to create .htaccess as a universal fix without identifying whether it is read and whether the actor should hold that configuration authority.

Require both policy and file-access evidence

The complete local model below combines two declared booleans: Apache policy permits the request and the selected identity can perform the required file access. It rejects either missing condition. It is not an Apache authorization engine, POSIX permission evaluator, ACL checker, or platform-label test. Actual access can involve more checks and a different request handler. The model preserves the important boundary that changing one layer cannot guarantee the other. Keep fixes narrow and coordinate actual permission work with the resource owner outside this read-only course.

python A synthetic two-layer access predicate
def readable(policy_allows, required_file_access):
    return policy_allows and required_file_access
print(readable(True, False))
print(readable(False, True))
print(readable(True, True))
Expected output
False
False
True

Only booleans are evaluated. No identity, directory, permission, ACL, security label, .htaccess file, or server is inspected or changed.

Common errors and fixes

Require all granted is assumed to repair a filesystem denial.

Why it happens
Request policy was confused with operating-system capability.
How to fix it
Identify the exact required file operation and owner-reviewed access contract.
Prevent it next time
Keep authorization and filesystem evidence separate.

Options -Indexes is treated as protection for every private file.

Why it happens
Directory listing behavior was confused with access to known paths.
How to fix it
Use appropriate authorization and content placement for private material.
Prevent it next time
Review direct-file and index requests as different cases.

A .htaccess change is expected to work where overrides are disabled.

Why it happens
Delegated configuration discovery was assumed rather than established.
How to fix it
Review effective AllowOverride and supported directive scope.
Prevent it next time
Document where policy authority actually resides.

Check your understanding

1. The directory listing is disabled but /guide.html is known. Is that file necessarily denied?

Show worked solution

No. Indexes controls listing behavior, not universal direct-file authorization. Applicable Require rules, filesystem access, mapping, and handlers determine the response. A private file needs an explicit appropriate policy rather than obscurity.

2. Apache policy permits the request but the server identity cannot traverse a parent directory. What should the review establish?

Show worked solution

Identify the actual mapped path, required traversal and read operations, platform controls, and ownership. Coordinate a narrow legitimate correction with the owner. Do not grant broad write access or change unrelated directories to make one request succeed.

Key takeaways

  • Authorization, file access, listing, and override delegation differ.
  • Diagnose the exact denied boundary before changing authority.
