Lesson goals

  • Distinguish no-cache, no-store, private, freshness, and validation.
  • Explain why URL alone can be an incomplete representation key.

A cache reuses a response under a policy

HTTP caching is not just keeping a file for speed. A cache needs rules for whether storage is allowed, how long a response is fresh, what varies the representation, and when the origin must validate it. Parcel’s public manual can have a different policy from a personalized account response. Apache’s cache modules and storage providers have their own prerequisites and processing position. A shared cache can affect access boundaries, so review documented quick-handler behavior and authorization interactions before enabling it. This course enables or clears no cache.

Names that sound similar have different meanings

Under HTTP caching semantics, no-cache permits storage subject to required validation before reuse, while no-store directs caches not to store the relevant message under its rules. private constrains shared caching and does not by itself mean no browser storage. Freshness lifetime and validators such as ETag or Last-Modified answer other questions. None retroactively erases a copy already disclosed elsewhere. Review application authorization, sensitive data, intermediaries, and browser behavior together instead of treating a single response directive as a complete confidentiality system.

State a scoped private-response illustration

The fragment below illustrates a no-store private response policy for one synthetic account route through mod_headers. It is never loaded and does not prove every possible response path receives the intended final header. Backend values, duplicate tables, errors, redirects, and other caches require review. It is not a universal header prescription for all content. A real owner should establish the application’s data and caching contract rather than disabling useful public caching or permitting personalized shared reuse by accident.

apache A non-runnable private-route response fragment
<Location "/account/">
    Header always set Cache-Control "private, no-store"
</Location>

The route, module, authentication, content, and cache path are absent assumptions. No response, cache entry, header, credential, or access rule is inspected or changed.

The cache key must distinguish meaningful variants

The same URI can return another language, content coding, authorization-dependent content, or a different result selected by application inputs. Vary communicates certain request-header selection dimensions, but it is not permission to share every personalized response. Review query and cookie semantics and do not blindly strip identity-bearing inputs to increase hit rate. Compression and validators must remain consistent with representation selection. A stale or mis-keyed successful response can look like a deployment failure while actually coming from a cache that never contacted the intended origin.

Keep language and coding variants separate locally

The complete local model constructs a declared tuple key from path, language, and content coding. It shows that two language variants should not collapse in this synthetic public-content contract. It is not Apache mod_cache, HTTP header parsing, Vary evaluation, authentication handling, or a complete cache-key algorithm. Real correctness needs actual supported cache behavior and application policy in an authorized environment. Include authorized and unauthorized users, variants, stale validation, and origin failure where relevant, and preserve the distinction between a cache hit and a correct user outcome.

python A synthetic public-variant key model
def key(path, language, coding):
    return path, language, coding
a = key("/manual.json", "en", "gzip")
b = key("/manual.json", "ar", "gzip")
print(a == b)
print(a == key("/manual.json", "en", "gzip"))
Expected output
False
True

Only tuples are compared. No cache, response, cookie, authorization value, file, or server is accessed.

Common errors and fixes

no-cache is described as a universal ban on storing data.

Why it happens
Validation requirements were confused with no-store semantics.
How to fix it
Use the actual HTTP directive meanings for the application contract.
Prevent it next time
Document storage, freshness, validation, and privacy separately.

Personalized responses are shared because the URI matches.

Why it happens
Identity and representation variation were omitted from reuse policy.
How to fix it
Review authorization and private data before any shared-cache decision.
Prevent it next time
Test cross-user and variant isolation as correctness requirements.

A cache-hit increase is celebrated while language variants mix.

Why it happens
Performance is improved by weakening representation identity.
How to fix it
Restore appropriate variant selection and compare correct outcomes.
Prevent it next time
Use correctness and privacy guardrails alongside hit rates.

Check your understanding

1. Can no-cache still allow a response to be stored?

Show worked solution

Yes under its HTTP semantics, with required validation before reuse. It is not the same as no-store. The actual request, response, cache type, and other directives still matter, so state the complete contract rather than relying on a misleading name.

2. Does the tuple model prove that a real cache separates Arabic and English content?

Show worked solution

No. It proves only its declared key comparison. Actual Vary, application selection, intermediaries, and cache implementation need appropriate authorized evidence. A correct local model cannot establish how a server was configured.

Key takeaways

  • Storage, freshness, validation, variants, and privacy are different controls.
  • A cache hit is useful only when the reused representation is correct and permitted.
