Ansible: explicit contracts and reliable automation
A complete Ansible progression through inventory, YAML, modules, data, templates, handlers, roles, collections, secrets, validation, delegation, rolling changes, platforms, and evidence-led diagnosis.
Start learningIn this course
Learn to reason about automation as a set of explicit target, data, state, and acceptance contracts. Eighteen developed lessons move from the ansible-core execution model to reusable roles, modern templating, secret protection, failure recovery, shared-resource orchestration, and maintainable project design.
All Ansible YAML examples remain illustrative and non-runnable. Only synthetic offline Python models and YAML parsing were executed; no configured inventory, SSH, target, service, privilege escalation, Vault content, or secret system was accessed. Engine and Jinja runtime behavior is explained from official documentation rather than claimed as locally tested.
What you will learn
- Define target populations, typed inputs, module contracts, and truthful result semantics.
- Design deterministic templates, handler lifecycles, reusable roles, and pinned dependencies.
- Separate secret, check-mode, tag, delegation, privilege, and rollout boundaries.
- Plan layered tests, idempotence evidence, recovery, and narrow troubleshooting without unreviewed effects.
Your learning path
Three levels
Basic: execution, inventory, and typed state
Build explicit models for the engine, YAML, target selection, modules, variables, facts, conditions, and loops.
- Understand Ansible’s automation model
- Write unambiguous YAML playbooks
- Design inventory and verify target selection
- Choose modules and interpret their results
- Trace variable types, scope, and precedence
- Use facts, conditions, and loops with typed inputs
Intermediate: reuse, secrets, and scoped validation
Connect templates, handlers, roles, collection dependencies, Vault protection, and check/diff/tag workflows.
- Render templates from validated data contracts
- Connect truthful changes to handler execution
- Package reusable behavior as role interfaces
- Pin collections and execution dependencies
- Protect secrets across storage and execution
- Interpret check mode, diff mode, and tags honestly
Advanced: orchestration, platforms, tests, and diagnosis
Plan recovery, delegation, rolling batches, privilege boundaries, layered tests, and reproducible project architecture.
- Define failure, retries, and recovery honestly
- Trace delegation and host-context ownership
- Design rolling changes with capacity and stop conditions
- Design platform and privilege contracts
- Build layered automation tests and honest evidence
- Organize automation and diagnose from evidence
Who this is for
- Developers and operators learning to design, review, and maintain Ansible automation.
- Learners who need clear boundaries between parser checks, engine behavior, target effects, and application acceptance.
Before you start
- Basic files, structured data, command-line, and configuration-management concepts.
- Optional Python and PyYAML for offline examples; no Ansible installation or administrative access is required to read the course.
