Diagnose a reactive value that no longer updates

Trace the owner, source read, mutation, and consumer before adding watchers or forcing a remount.

Recognize the symptoms

A field shows its initial prop forever, a counter changes in a debugger but not in the view, or a store value stops following updates after destructuring. The problem may appear only after a parent update or list reorder. A successful initial render does not establish that the consumer retains a live relationship with its source.

Understand the likely causes

  • Common causes include copied primitives, reading .value before passing a source, mutating the wrong raw object, replacing an owner unexpectedly, or using a shallow API as if it were deeply reactive. Vue 3.5โ€™s defineProps destructuring transform is specific to its SFC compiler context and does not apply to arbitrary objects or Pinia stores.

Map the complete value path

Record the Vue/compiler baseline, component owner, original source, mutation line, and exact read used by the template or computed value. Determine whether each boundary carries a snapshot, ref, getter, proxy, or store property. Inspect the actual current data without dumping private payloads. A list-key problem can make control state follow the wrong record even when reactivity is correct, so separate source observation from rendered identity. Do not begin by recreating the entire app or adding a deep watcher that hides an ownership defect.

Restore a live source contract

Read the prop directly or derive from a getter that preserves access. Use storeToRefs for Pinia state extraction where appropriate, and keep ordinary JavaScript copying rules distinct from compiler transforms. The component below derives from props.title instead of initializing a private ref from the initial title. It is a read-only normalized view; an editable draft needs an explicit synchronization and cancellation policy. Passing a getter to a composable preserves the relationship only if the composable reads it inside tracked execution.

vue A live derived prop read for the Vue 3.5 baseline
<script setup>
import { computed } from "vue"
const props = defineProps({ title: { type: String, required: true } })
const normalized = computed(() => props.title.trim())
</script>

<template>
  <p>{{ normalized }}</p>
</template>

Requires a parent that changes title and a configured SFC compiler/runtime. A change from " Notes " to " Review " should display Review. This is documented framework behavior; the SFC was not mounted in a browser during authoring.

Check timing and repeated-item identity separately

If the state read is live, determine whether the observation happens before Vue flushes DOM updates. Use nextTick or the relevant documented post-update boundary when a DOM read genuinely needs it, not an arbitrary delay. For lists, verify unique stable keys and control labels after insertion, sorting, and filtering. For shallow state, follow the declared outer replacement or explicit trigger contract. A force-render key can conceal the symptom by destroying the component while losing drafts and focus; use remounting only when that lifecycle change is actually intended.

Verify the fix

Reproduce the initial value and at least one later source change in the actual compatible component test environment. Assert the visible value, event payload where relevant, and unchanged unrelated state. Include a parent update, list reorder, or owner replacement that originally exposed the defect. A standalone JavaScript copy test can explain the language boundary but cannot prove Vue tracking or DOM rendering. Report the exact runtime and compiler tested and keep any unexecuted integration assumptions explicit.

Keep it from recurring

  • Document helper inputs as snapshots, refs, or getters; keep one owner for each mutable value; and test updates after initialization. Review Vue 3.5 props destructuring separately from general destructuring and Pinia extraction. Avoid unnecessary deep watchers, copied derived state, and remount-based fixes. Keep stable list identity and state lifetime part of component review.
