Recognize the symptoms

A dependency declaration or lock record shows a corrected classroom version, but an artifact inventory still lists the old component. A finding was closed because the update operation completed. Preserve the exact source revision, resolved inventory, artifact identity, build context, and component relationship before deciding which record is stale or which packaging path retained the old copy.

Understand the likely causes

  • Possible causes include a cached artifact, another dependency path, vendored content, an optional package, a stale inventory, or a build from a different source revision. A component name alone cannot distinguish them. Applicability also depends on ecosystem identity and authoritative affected conditions; the invented package examples below imply no real advisory or vulnerability.

Align records to the same intended build

Identify what each record describes: desired dependency, resolved package graph, packaged files, or deployed content. Compare revisions and timestamps only as supporting context; the decisive relationship is whether the inventory actually describes the artifact under review. Do not delete caches, rebuild project services, or run update commands as an exploratory shortcut. Use existing authorized metadata and synthetic copies for analysis. Record unknown relationships explicitly. A stale inventory and a retained old component require different corrections, so avoid treating every mismatch as proof that the package manager failed.

Compare scoped component identities

The local program compares the declared and packaged versions of an invented exact identity and reports the mismatch. It performs no version-range evaluation, advisory lookup, or package installation. For a real case, use ecosystem-aware approved tooling and authoritative maintainer information, accounting for vendor backports and packaging conventions. Trace direct and transitive relationships to locate another copy instead of assuming that one top-level declaration controls every bundled component. Do not label unknown runtime use not affected; keep the applicability question separate from the inventory mismatch.

python Check a fictional declaration-to-artifact mismatch
declared = {"ecosystem":"lab-python", "name":"schedule-reader", "version":"2.4.2"}
packaged = {"ecosystem":"lab-python", "name":"schedule-reader", "version":"2.4.1"}
assert (declared["ecosystem"], declared["name"]) == (packaged["ecosystem"], packaged["name"])
assert declared["version"] != packaged["version"]
print("declared and packaged versions differ")
Expected output
declared and packaged versions differ

The complete program compares three metadata fields in memory. It names no real vulnerable package and reads no project manifest. The result establishes only this synthetic mismatch, not its cause or security severity.

Correct the responsible packaging or evidence path

Once the responsible boundary is known, prepare the narrow approved change to dependency resolution, vendored content, packaging, or inventory generation. If the evidence was stale, correct its association without claiming a code repair occurred. If content was retained, verify the actual replacement and relevant behavior. A successful update command or renamed package directory is insufficient closure evidence. Review whether configuration or source changes are also required by the authoritative remediation guidance, and keep any temporary mitigation and residual uncertainty visible.

Verify the fix

Verify the exact replacement artifact, its corresponding component inventory, and meaningful compatibility and security regressions at the affected boundary. Record actual outputs and source/build identities. Keep corrected-in-source distinct from verified-in-artifact and released. This guide executes only the metadata comparison; no build, install, configured service, advisory engine, or deployment was run.

Keep it from recurring

  • Bind inventories to artifacts, retain dependency relationships, and require shipped-content evidence before closing component findings. Keep ecosystem identity and applicability rationale explicit. Review packaging changes alongside lockfile changes so a corrected declaration cannot silently stand in for a corrected delivered product.
