Desired manifest generation fails before a useful comparison
Trace the resolved source, path, renderer, values, and dependencies without treating the error as a cluster apply failure.

Recognize the symptoms
The Application reports a manifest-generation or comparison error and no trustworthy current desired resource set is available. The live workload may continue serving its earlier state, which does not establish that the requested revision rendered successfully.
The same source label can appear to work locally while the controller’s generation context fails. Another symptom is unexpectedly empty or renamed output after a values, source-path, dependency, or tool change.
Understand the likely causes
- The resolved revision or path may not contain required files, a values reference can be wrong, or the selected chart, overlay, dependency, or renderer version can differ from the assumed environment.
- Mutable external inputs, missing access, nondeterministic templates, and incompatible tool options can produce distinct failures. A source change can also select another rendering contract entirely. Repeating sync cannot supply a desired set that was never generated correctly.
Preserve the source-to-render relationship
Record the Application name and namespace, project, source repositories, resolved revisions, source paths, tool selection, relevant non-sensitive overrides, and bounded error from existing authorized evidence. For multiple sources, retain the complete revision vector and values reference. Do not copy full credentials, values files, or generated Secrets into diagnostics. A moving branch name is context, not the exact identity needed to compare two generation attempts.
Classify the failing input before choosing a remedy
Separate source acquisition, missing file, dependency resolution, template or patch failure, output validation, and unexpected empty output. The diagram below is a conceptual review sequence. It neither retrieves a repository nor invokes Helm, Kustomize, a plugin, or Argo CD. Keep the first failing boundary so a later successful attempt can be explained rather than merely accepted.
resolved source -> required path and files
path and files + values + toolchain -> rendered resource set
rendered set -> identity, scope, and policy review
The map describes questions to answer with retained evidence. It is not a renderer, schema validator, or command sequence and performs no network or cluster action.
Review the actual configuration layers
For Helm, inspect all supported values layers and their documented precedence rather than only the repository values file. For Kustomize, inspect the selected overlay, base revisions, patches, images, names, and namespace transformations. For plugins, review implementation and executable trust. Compare the controller’s actual supported tool context with the local assumptions. A local render from a different toolchain or incomplete source vector is not equivalent evidence.
Restore a bounded valid generation contract
Correct the source path, missing declared input, dependency identity, or supported tool option through source review. Do not widen project or cluster permissions for a source-only failure without evidence that authorization is the relevant boundary. Do not enable allowEmpty merely to silence an unexpected empty result. If an external mutable input changed, make that dependency explicit and review the newly generated resource identities and removal implications before any separately authorized adoption.
Verify the fix
Using retained output or a separately authorized isolated rendering environment with the intended tools, confirm the exact resolved source vector generates the expected resource identities, kinds, namespaces, and meaningful fields. Compare redacted output and retain the explanation for the original error. This guide performs no fetch, render, cluster query, sync, or permission change.
Keep it from recurring
- Keep source paths, toolchain, dependency resolution, values ownership, and expected resource scope versioned together. Test missing-value and empty-output cases, protect plugin trust boundaries, and retain generation evidence without secret payloads. Require a review when source order or rendering parameters change.
