Ruby: Objects, Contracts, and Reliable Local Reasoning
Learn Ruby through references, truthiness, method and block contracts, collections, value models, exception boundaries, and explicit execution assumptions.
Start learningIn this course
Eighteen developed lessons use synthetic archive records to connect Ruby-specific behavior with concrete code, reasoned expected outputs, realistic error/cause/fix records, and exercises with worked solutions. The progression moves from values and missing data to method lookup, Data records, patterns, validated JSON, resources, concurrency, and an offline import capstone.
All identifiers, quantities, settings, records, and results are fictional teaching data. The course does not access services, databases, accounts, credentials, or real archive files. Examples distinguish local language semantics from authorization, persistence, resource release, and recovery guarantees that require their own implementation evidence.
What you will learn
- Explain Ruby truthiness, numeric meaning, references, mutation, freezing, and missing-data distinctions.
- Design method, keyword, block, Proc, lambda, and mixin contracts with explicit return and failure behavior.
- Choose collection evaluation, Data or Struct models, pattern matching, and stable hash-key semantics deliberately.
- Validate decoded data, own IO and concurrency lifetimes, and separate trusted loading from untrusted input.
- Report runtime, dependency, behavior, and platform evidence without claiming unperformed tests.

Three levels
Foundations: values, methods, text, and valid objects
Develop precise object-reference, truthiness, method, parsing, collection, and construction reasoning.
- Understand Ruby objects, bindings, and numeric meaning
- Write conditions using Ruby truthiness and expression results
- Design method, keyword, and block contracts
- Handle text, encodings, and numeric conversion deliberately
- Use arrays and hashes without hiding missing data
- Construct valid objects and control their public surface
Contracts: callables, evaluation, failures, and value models
Use callbacks, Enumerable, exceptions, mixins, Data/Struct, and patterns without hidden lifetime or validation assumptions.
- Control block, Proc, and lambda lifetimes
- Build Enumerable pipelines with deliberate evaluation
- Translate exceptions without hiding failures
- Compose modules through a visible method lookup contract
- Choose Data or Struct with explicit value semantics
- Match structured data without overclaiming validation
Integration: data, resources, runtime evidence, and trust
Connect validated JSON, IO ownership, dependencies, concurrency, controlled loading, and an offline archive capstone.
- Turn decoded JSON into a validated archive record
- Own IO lifetimes and text boundaries
- Make checks deterministic and dependencies explicit
- Choose concurrency with explicit state and lifetime ownership
- Keep loading and dispatch separate from untrusted data
- Review a typed archive-import policy and its limits
Who this is for
- Programmers beginning Ruby who want precise dynamic-language and collection behavior.
- Application developers and reviewers designing clear method, data, exception, and ownership contracts.
Before you start
- Basic familiarity with variables, functions, loops, and structured data in any programming language.
- Independent execution requires a learner-owned isolated Ruby environment compatible with the selected Ruby 3.3 baseline and any explicitly required library. Rails, cloud accounts, external services, and project or global gem installation are not required by this material.
