PHP: Language and Server Foundations
Learn PHP values, functions, arrays, HTTP boundaries, objects, PDO, sessions, testing, and maintainable APIs with explicit version assumptions and isolated evidence.
Start learningIn this course
Eighteen complete self-study chapters develop PHP language and server reasoning through synthetic course, price, enrollment, and response examples. Each chapter includes developed explanations, two worked examples with exact outputs, common failures with prevention, and exercises with explained solutions. The course progresses from values and forms to object contracts, data access, sessions, advanced types, resource lifetime, security, performance, and compatibility.
The default syntax baseline is PHP 8.3, with PHP 8.4 property hooks and the PHP 8.5 pipe operator explicitly labeled as exceptions. Complete examples were validated on installed PHP 8.5.12 CLI, using owned temporary resources and in-memory SQLite only. CLI evidence does not establish real HTTP or browser-cookie behavior. Laravel-specific architecture belongs to a separate course; no application services, credentials, or production systems are used.
What you will learn
- Explain types, arrays, text units, functions, closures, and object ownership.
- Validate input and construct safe HTML, JSON, and HTTP response decisions.
- Use prepared values, transactions, session lifecycles, and isolated tests with explicit limitations.
- Evaluate advanced features, security, performance, and compatibility using official references and actual evidence.

Three levels
Basic: values and request foundations
Build clear value, text, array, function, input, and response contracts.
- PHP execution, values, and the runtime boundary
- Strings, text boundaries, and encoding
- Arrays, control flow, and explicit absence
- Functions, scope, and closure capture
- HTTP input, forms, and validation boundaries
- Escaping, headers, and response construction
Intermediate: objects, persistence, and tests
Connect object interfaces, loading, failures, PDO, sessions, and deterministic tests.
- Objects, interfaces, and domain invariants
- Namespaces, autoloading, and Composer contracts
- Exceptions, warnings, and failure ownership
- PDO, prepared SQL, and transactions
- Sessions, cookies, and state ownership
- Testing PHP contracts with isolated evidence
Advanced: reliable models and runtime evidence
Apply advanced types, resource ownership, security, performance, APIs, and version compatibility.
- Advanced types and explicit domain models
- Generators, streams, and resource lifetime
- Security boundaries and sensitive operations
- Performance, allocation, and runtime evidence
- Maintainable HTTP and JSON API boundaries
- Runtime versions, feature boundaries, and compatibility
Who this is for
- Learners building a principled foundation in PHP before adopting a server framework.
- Developers reviewing type, request, database, session, and response contracts.
Before you start
- Basic file, terminal, browser, and HTML-form familiarity.
- Optional local execution needs PHP CLI and PDO SQLite for database demonstrations; no configured application is required.
