Version migration and analytical correctness

Review version-dependent behavior with representative contracts rather than assuming unchanged syntax means unchanged results.

Lesson goals

  • Identify pandas3 string, mutation, grouping and datetime migration boundaries.
  • Preserve accepted source and result evidence through a compatibility change.

One pandas version does not describe every backend

An analytical runtime includes Python, pandas, NumPy, optional string/IO backends, timezone data and sometimes execution engines. Record exact versions relevant to the claim instead of assuming a pandas number fully determines representation and performance. The selected3.1.0 documentation is the teaching baseline, not a latest-release or support promise. Core examples deliberately avoid requiring optional packages. A source with identical bytes can still produce a different dtype or missing representation after an upgrade, and a visually similar table can change later comparisons or joins. Review the full input and output contract, not only whether imports still work.

Migrate meanings as well as spelling

The 3.0 transition introduced inferred str dtype and consistent Copy-on-Write semantics, and changed categorical grouping defaults among other behaviors. Chained assignment no longer updates a parent object. Datetime resolution should be inspected rather than assumed nanoseconds, and removed/deprecated aliases or arguments require selected-version review. Inferred str and explicit string differ in default missing semantics. A merge copy argument is not a way to request legacy shared-view mutation under the 3.x contract. Treat these as behavioral compatibility questions with fixtures for original/derived objects, missing text, category populations and exact time boundaries.

State two concrete3.1 expectations

The illustrative pandas program checks inferred string representation and derived-column mutation independently. A Series of plain strings is expected to display dtype str, and changing a selected units Series should leave the parent values unchanged. The program was not run and does not test every backend or patch. Its role is to make migration expectations visible rather than hide them behind a generic compatibility flag. Add fixtures drawn from the actual workflow before adopting a new runtime. Passing these two cases alone would not prove merge cardinality, date parsing, file round-trips or aggregate denominators remained correct.

python Illustrative selected-baseline behavior checks
import pandas as pd

labels = pd.Series(['A', 'B'])
assert str(labels.dtype) == 'str'
frame = pd.DataFrame({'units': [1, 2]})
selected = frame['units']
selected.iloc[0] = 9
assert frame['units'].tolist() == [1, 2]
print(str(labels.dtype), frame['units'].tolist())
Expected output
str [1, 2]

Expected output is str and unchanged [1,2] under 3.1; this is not an observed runtime compatibility result.

Keep a finite acceptance inventory

The JSON inventory names source schema, calculation version and required checks for labels, missingness, merge relationships and temporal coverage. It is documentation, not a package lockfile or installation instruction. Compare old and candidate results using a deliberate equality policy, and investigate changes before normalizing them away. Warnings can identify future incompatibilities, but silencing all warnings does not migrate the code. Preserve representative source snapshots and expected business results so a later patch can be reviewed against the same contract. If the contract intentionally changes, version the rule and explain the resulting population or measure difference.

{"pandas_documentation_baseline":"3.1.0","source_schema":"lab-inventory-v1","calculation_version":"v2","acceptance_checks":["label-identity","missing-denominators","merge-cardinality","time-bin-coverage"],"pandas_runtime_executed":false}

The record states review scope and honestly records an unexecuted pandas runtime; it installs nothing.

Separate a teaching baseline from tested compatibility

No pandas runtime, upgrade, dependency installation or external analytical system is used in this course. Every pandas program is marked runnable:false with derived expectations; only isolated standard-library models and JSON/parser checks are executed. Syntax validation does not prove library availability or semantic correctness. The official references support the selected concepts and version assumptions, while a deployment compatibility claim needs actual authorized engine evidence. Report what changed, which invariant was checked and what remains untested. This distinction lets learners use concrete examples without inheriting a fabricated claim that the author exercised unavailable3.1 behavior or optional storage backends.

Common errors and fixes

A migration is accepted because all imports succeed.

Why it happens
Behavioral and analytical contracts were not compared.
How to fix it
Test representative values, dtypes, labels, missingness and coverage.
Prevent it next time
Keep a finite versioned acceptance inventory.

A dtype change is dismissed because printed values look identical.

Why it happens
Representation semantics were treated as formatting only.
How to fix it
Review downstream comparison, missing and serialization behavior.
Prevent it next time
Compare required metadata as well as values.

All warnings are suppressed and the code is called migrated.

Why it happens
Diagnostics were hidden rather than resolving the affected contract.
How to fix it
Review the selected release notes and fix or explicitly accept each relevant change.
Prevent it next time
Track deprecations alongside source and expected-result fixtures.

Check your understanding

1. Does an unchanged CSV prove a pandas upgrade preserved analytical behavior?

Show worked solution

No. Export can hide dtype, category, timezone and mutation differences that affect later processing. Compare structured results and the relevant business invariants in an authorized runtime. Preserve exact source and dependency evidence so a compatible-looking artifact does not substitute for a real migration acceptance record.

2. Why must this course say that pandas examples were not executed?

Show worked solution

The package is absent, so only syntax and independent standard-library models can be verified locally. Derived examples remain useful for teaching exact contracts, but presenting them as observed engine behavior would overstate the evidence. A later learner or reviewer needs that boundary to decide what must be tested in a real compatible environment.

Key takeaways

  • A version migration must preserve or intentionally version analytical meaning.
  • Selected documentation and actual runtime validation are distinct evidence.
