Networking: protocols, evidence, and resilient design
A complete progression through TCP/IP, addressing, routing, naming, configuration, secure applications, segmentation, packet evidence, performance, and resilient design.
Start learningIn this course
Learn to explain a request path one protocol milestone at a time. Eighteen developed lessons connect Ethernet and ARP, IPv4 and IPv6, routing, TCP/UDP, DNS/DHCP, TLS, HTTP, policy boundaries, path MTU, observability, capacity, and network design.
All exercises are synthetic and offline. Runnable examples perform only standard-library calculations or parse declared fixtures; illustrative protocol descriptions do not configure devices. The course never sends traffic, performs scans, captures live packets, or changes host networking.
What you will learn
- Calculate prefixes and explain local versus routed delivery in IPv4 and IPv6.
- Separate transport, naming, configuration, identity, and application milestones.
- Interpret scoped packet and performance evidence without unsupported causal claims.
- Design segmentation, routing resilience, change validation, and rollback around explicit requirements.
Your learning path
Three levels
Basic: packet paths and addressing
Build a layered model of local delivery, prefixes, routes, transports, naming, and automatic configuration.
- Follow TCP/IP layers and endpoint identities
- Calculate IPv4 prefixes and subnet boundaries
- Explain Ethernet switching and ARP delivery
- Select routes and follow next hops
- Compare TCP, UDP, and service endpoints
- Connect naming and automatic configuration
Intermediate: lifecycle, trust, and application protocols
Connect IPv6, TCP state, DNS trust, DHCP lifecycle, TLS identity, and HTTP intermediaries.
- Explain IPv6 addressing and local discovery
- Read TCP state, flow control, and congestion
- Trace DNS resolution, caching, and trust
- Trace DHCP leases, relays, and address lifecycle
- Verify TLS identity and protocol negotiation
- Follow HTTP semantics through intermediaries
Advanced: policy, evidence, capacity, and resilient design
Reason about segmentation, convergence, MTU, scoped packet evidence, performance, and failure-aware architecture.
- Separate segmentation, policy, and address translation
- Design routing and reason about convergence
- Reason about MTU, ICMP, and path discovery
- Interpret packet evidence and observability limits
- Distinguish capacity, delay, goodput, and queue pressure
- Design resilient dependencies and reversible change
Who this is for
- Learners building a practical foundation in network protocols and architecture.
- Developers and operators who need precise layered diagnosis and design reasoning.
Before you start
- Basic computer use, arithmetic, and familiarity with application requests and files.
- Optional Python 3 for harmless offline examples; no network administration access is needed.
