FastAPI: typed APIs and reliable application boundaries
A complete path through FastAPI routing, Pydantic validation, dependencies, async execution, authentication, resource authorization, OpenAPI, testing, persistence, lifespan, background work, and reliable operations.

Study eighteen developed lessons in three ordered levels. Each lesson connects HTTP behavior to explicit ownership of input, identity, state, resources, and outcomes, with two complete explained examples, three diagnostic mistakes, two worked exercises, objectives, takeaways, and official references.
Examples use isolated TestClient applications, in-memory ASGI or mock transports, pure Python, and one privately owned in-memory SQLite fixture. They start no listening server and contact no external service, configured project database, account, or credential. Network socket connections are explicitly blocked during example verification.
What you will learn
- Declare and verify stable input, response, error, and OpenAPI contracts.
- Separate credential parsing, trusted identity, resource permission, and transaction outcomes.
- Own resource lifetime, bounded async work, observability, and reliable recovery without overstating local tests.
Your learning path
Three levels
Basic: HTTP and typed boundaries
Build precise contracts for routes, inputs, models, responses, errors, and reusable dependencies.
- ASGI, HTTP, and route selection
- Path, query, and type contracts
- Request bodies and Pydantic validation
- Responses, status, and serialization
- Errors and validation boundaries
- Dependencies and application composition
Intermediate: application integration and security
Connect async execution, isolated tests, OpenAPI, trusted identity, resource policy, and transaction boundaries.
- Async execution and blocking work
- Testing and dependency isolation
- Routers, OpenAPI, and contract evolution
- Authentication and security schemes
- Resource authorization and tenant scope
- Database and unit-of-work boundaries
Advanced: lifecycle and reliable service design
Reason about lifespan, streaming, background work, middleware, upstream budgets, deployment assumptions, and recovery evidence.
- Lifespan and yield cleanup
- Background work and durable jobs
- Middleware, CORS, and observability
- Outbound clients and concurrency budgets
- Settings, hosts, and deployment boundaries
- Reliable API design and production evidence
Who this is for
- Python learners who want to design and test backend APIs with explicit contracts.
- Developers reviewing validation, security, persistence, concurrency, or lifecycle behavior in FastAPI.
Before you start
- Basic Python functions, collections, exceptions, and type annotations; HTTP and async concepts are explained in context.
- An isolated Python environment with the documented package baseline; no database server, cloud account, real credentials, or network listener is required.
